Everyone is aware of the fact that water is essential in our daily lives to keep us hydrated. Yet most people are not aware of the many benefits of the blessed H2O and just how important it is, particularly for pregnant women. 1. Prevent Dehydration

Drinking enough water prevents dehydration. The reason this is particularly important when pregnant? Dehydration in expectant mothers can lead to more severe complications than when not expecting such as headaches, nausea, cramps, exhaustion and dizziness.  It is particularly vital to avoid dehydration in the third trimester as this can lead to a preterm labour.

2. Relieve Morning Sickness and Nausea

Many women believe that drinking more fluids can help relieve symptoms of morning sickness, acidity and heartburn and even indigestion.

3. Keep Your Body Cool

Particularly in the warmer, humid months, it is imperative to consumer enough water to maintain your temperature and keep your body cool. Water keeps your body’s cooling system running smoothly by dispersing excess heat in the form of seat.

4. Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

The more water you drink, the more diluted your urine and the less chance you’ll have of contracting a urinary tract infection. Because pregnant women are more at risk of urinary infections, you must take extra precautions to avoid them.

5. Aid Digestion

Drinking adequate amounts of water when pregnant will help ease constipation and haemorrhoids. Water generally helps dissolve waste products and flush them from the kidneys.

6. For Breastmilk

Because water is a key component of breastmilk, it is vital to keep hydrated to ensure good lactation.

Water is essential for everyone to keep organs functioning properly and to maintain healthy blood cells. This is of heightened important for pregnant women on account of the demands of the changing body throughout the pregnancy process.

8. Combat Dry Skin

Drinking more water can help ‘babify’ your skin as hydrating the skin eliminates itchy or scratchy feelings and helps you gain a clearer complexion.

9. Prevent Water Retention. 

Paradoxically, the more water you drink the less water you actually retain. So drinking plenty of H2O helps you avoid that puffy look often associated with mother-to-be. Keeping up your fluids prevents oedema – swollen hands or feet.

10. Nourish your Baby

Water facilitates the absorption of essential nutrients and then aids the flow of such vitamins, minerals, hormones and trace elements to your baby. Therefore, it helps ensure the foetus receives all it’s necessary nutrients.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

It is recommended that pregnant women should drink about 3 litres of water each day to ensure all of the above tasks are completed.
